Photos ~ TAM's 'Glitter' aftermath
After enjoying a bit of the opening night of Showcase Tacoma we headed over to TAM for their shindig. Sarah, In-Tacoma's Michael and I walked into the presenting of awards of the iron artist contest. It looked like teams were given numerous crafts to work with and they created a menagerie of pieces. Everyone was gathered in the entry area and above it while artists described their creations. Some people were dressed up almost Mardis Gras style with shiny makeup and outfits while others were getting their faces painted upstairs in the activity room. A DJ was spinning mostly 80s-related tunes and there was champaign flowing and cotton candy blowing upstairs.
It was a fun gathering to hang out a bit and see people though since we missed the main event itself, frankly, there wasn't much else to do. Coupled with Showcase Tacoma, it did make for a lovely evening with lovely people in some seriously lovely weather.
Oh, and I tried to look for TAM's new wifi hook-up but no dice. Maybe they shut it off after hours. Also, if anyone's out at Showcase today Sarah and I will be out there all afternoon. If you see us feel free to say hi!

I hear Ryan Mello is trying to get Metro Parks to offer wifi as well. Good idea.

Metro Parks is running a one-year pilot wifi project in Wright Park. The network covers roughly 90% of the park -- there are a couple of dead zones. You might have difficulty connecting in the section of the park nearest Division and a semi-circular spot across from the Hob Nob on G Street. In other areas you should be able to log on to Tacoma Park and/or Tacoma Park 1 during regular park hours (half-hour before sunrise and half-hour after sunset).
This is a free hot-spot and users are advised that it is an unsecured system.
The pilot will run through August 08 as the District staff assesses public use and interest, as well as maintenance and service expenses to determine whether the service will pencil out as something that enhances use of the park.
We are interested in hearing from those who use the service -- if you experience a "no dice" situation please email nancyj@tacomaparks.com. Also, we'll be conducting an online survey to help with our assessment. Look for that on the Metro Parks site around the end of September -- we'll leave the survey open through the end of the pilot next August.
