Nick-n-Willy's a fresh choice for North Enders
The new Nick-n-Willy's in Proctor had it's grand opening this weekend after about a week of tests with family, friends and passers by. Sarah and I stopped by there last Saturday to give them a go. Inside the place is clean and simple with a nice bar to pick up a beer (though I don't believe they have their liquor license yet) or quick slice and some nice brushed metal touches on the wall. If you choose to dine in (versus take out or take and bake) there's not too much room for groups larger than four and even moving a table or two around might then block smooth passage for anyone working there or trying to make it to the restroom.
There was what I would consider a larger than needed staff there with four people working the pizza assembly area, two at or near the till, and another two or three keeping an eye on the oven. My bet is they'll have no more than five people in there once things are running smoothly. Which, I would say, they nearly already were. The young man working the computer to take my order had a little understandable difficulty with the machine but the owner was present and both asked for, and received, my patience. The order went through just fine and we were on our way!
People streamed in and seemed to show the demand for this kind of place in the heart of Proctor. Our pie and bread sticks came out in about 10 minutes and was great. The crust was thin, but not too thin, and everything from that to the toppings tasted really fresh. The bread sticks made for a good side and delighted with their garlic. The two employees I asked about getting ranch for dipping were surprised a bit by the request mainly because they weren't yet prepped for it. They ended up giving me a packet normally used for salads but it worked.
Nick-n-Willy's will make a great place to grab some casual food in a place mostly surrounded by "sit-down" restaurants. The owner talked of plans to open up the front wall and offer sidewalk seating along with microbrews to enjoy while watching games. With a couple drinks, our 16" pizza, and bread sticks we still made out just under $25 with leftovers. The taste and convenience make it a pretty easy choice compared to our usual Round Table. I think Nick-n-Willy's makes a welcome addition to the Proctor neighborhood and is probably here to stay for a while.

Prium updates Economic Development Council re: Winthrop
An afternoon meeting of the Economic Development Council today had Prium providing an update about the Winthrop. The replacement low-income housing was the key topic the City wanted to hear about considering a loan to Prium from Tacoma is contingent upon that happening. Here are a couple highlights:
- two sights are being currently being considered by Prium to be purchased from the City: one at 34th and Pacific [ map ] and one somewhere along Tyler (can anyone figure out where?)
- the 34th and Pacific location could hold 50 units, the one on Tyler 80
- a location where the old Brown's Grill is in Upper Tacoma was considered but local backlash halted the idea
It'll be interesting if this "not in my neighborhood" mentality will occur anywhere Prium looks to relocate Winthrop residents. My hope is that, although costs for Prium would surely be higher, they have a chance to aim for smaller developments in more places around town. Nevertheless, glad to see no one's completely forgot about the Winthrop nor its current tenants.
