Tacoma Armory gallery at City Hall

Old City Hall gallery (photo by Naomi Strom-Avila)Photographs from the August photo safari through Tacoma's National Guard Armory are on display now at City Hall. The tour led people and their cameras through the 100 year old structure that proved a worthy subject. You can see selections from all the photographers at an exhibit hosted by the City of Tacoma in their 12th floor hallway gallery at the Municipal Building [ map ]. Stop by to see the show during normal business hours (8-5pm, M-F) or 'til 7pm on Tuesday due to City Council meetings. The exhibit will be on the walls into and possibly through December.

Also for anyone who likes snapping photos with any kind of camera the Tacoma Photo Gang is quiet no more. Many of our members* have been busy the last month but we're getting back together this Sunday for a trek to the Nisqually Wildlife Preserve. There's more info about the location, breakfast, and carpooling on the Tacoma Flickr group. If you'd like to come along just chime in. All are welcome!

* By which I mean anyone who wants to come along -- no fees, no snootiness, just fun!

Sign an ad, support climate change conversation

Citizen's for a Healthy Bay want to get the word out about Oct. 25th's "Day of Conversation on Climate Change". You can show your support by signing a full-page ad they plan to run in the News Tribune for a donation of $50 (or more, I'm sure). The event itself will take place at 7pm in the City Council Chamber and will feature Mayor Baarsma talk about what Tacoma is doing to help mitigate climate change.

Here's the full email:

You are invited to sign our full page ad in the TNT.

October 25, 2007 is Tacoma’s Day of Conversation about Climate Change – a day for Tacoma citizens to discuss, network and reflect on this “issue of issues.”  While many of us have begun taking steps large and small to reduce our carbon footprint, it will take coordinated actions from all quarters to meet the challenges of climate change.  The day will culminate in a presentation, “An Inconvenient Talk” by two scientists from the Earth Space Research Institute, followed by some words from our Mayor, Bill Baarsma.

Mayor Baarsma will introduce the work of the Green Ribbon Task Force, which was convened as part of the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement.  With the help of city staff, the task force is developing a citywide plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions and so join the nearly 700 cities across the nation that are acting to counter global warming.

On October 23, 2007 a full page ad will run in the TNT.  It will include text (see attachment), some graphics reflecting Puget Sound and our quality of life, and most importantly will include signatures of concerned Tacoma citizens who believe it is our responsibility to take on this challenge and believe we are more likely to produce positive results if we take it on together.  We hope it will be a diverse, nonpartisan group coming together with one voice on this hugely important issue.

To participate and become a signatory, we ask you to send $50.00 to Citizens for a Healthy Bay (address below) by October 19, 2007.  CHB will sponsor the ad, which will be paid for by all our donations.  Any funds above the cost of the ad will go to CHB to help in their work of preserving our Sound.

We invite you to not only join us with your contribution and signature but also to take the time to forward this email to your colleagues, friends and family who you think would want to add their names to the growing chorus of concerned citizens.

Thank you,

Nancy Dilworth, Executive Director, CEO, Citizens for a Healthy Bay
Ryan Mello, Co-chair, Green Ribbon Task Force
Clare Petrich, Port Commissioner
Paul Birkey, Belina Interiors

Mail donations by 10/19 to:
