Bombay Bistro coming to Sixth Ave (update)

Bombay Bistro coming soon signThe former site of the Happy Mart and Deli on N. 6th and Stevens will now be the Bombay Bistro! Their sign says "coming soon" but who knows what that'll mean. Anyone have any details on the place?

Seems to me this is a great move to help bring some of the life further east on Sixth Ave westward. Parking may be tight but, even with my paltry knowledge of Indian cuisine, I'll be sure to give them a shot when their doors open.

Thanks AP! (via FeedTacoma forums)

An upscale Indian restaurant is replacing the Happy Mart deli at Sixth Avenue and Stevens in Tacoma.

“So far we have decided to name it Bombay Bistro,” said Anita Walia, a Bombay, India, native who is opening the restaurant with her husband, Kamal, who hails from Punjab. "It’s almost official. But you never know.”

She's a non-practicing medical doctor. He's a Tacoma veterinarian. This is their first restaurant. They’re looking to open around April. Work is under way.

Anita Walia promised northern Indian, seafood specialties and unique Indian art and décor.

“It will be fine Indian cuisine, slightly modified for the American taste,” she said.

Excellent -- thanks Kim. I searched around on teh Internets and couldn't find anything even though I thought someone had covered it.

It'll be interesting to see what life this brings to that portion of Sixth.

Speaking of Indian food - I hope you've eaten at India Mahal (or, wait, did I ask you this before?) Boring-looking restaurant, awesome food. Lucas and I had lunch there after a short visit at PLU today.

Very nice. I went to a parking presentation yesterday on 6th Avenue in order to address the perceived "parking problem" at night.

My only comment was for them please not try to knock down storefronts, houses or build parking garages on 6th and make the area look like some of the sad areas of downtown Tacoma.

I'm waiting for some South Indian food & dosas to die for...anybody know where to get them? Will Anita make them?

by Jennifer

I've heard that dosas can be had behind Woody's in Federal Way

yeah, dosas! we were hoping that since the restaurant is based on bombay cuisine, there would be some south indian food. we have to go to bellevue for dosa!

Seems to me that the only Indian place in town worth going to is Gateway to India... they're been on 6th Ave since before it was cool to be there... and I don't think it was ever a mini-mart!

Bombay Bistro was definitely worth the wait! The food is absolutely delicious and the decor is amazing. There is no other place like this in Tacoma.

We were excited about eating here after such a long wait for the grand opening! We went at dinner on a Friday night (9/21). It was a little busy, but we were seated right away.

We ordered Chai (which was fine), and were given some crackers and dip to munch on.

We decided after 30 minutes that they may never take our orders, and it took another 10 minutes to flag down our waiter.

We ended leaving without having anything but tea and crackers...very disappointing.

We went down the road to Gateway and had a much more positive experience (just like always).

I hope they get things figured out down there - we weren't the only unsatisfied customers in the dining room that night.

Best Indian Food, happy with the friendly, quick service, delicious blending of spices, clear distinction among vegetables after cooking, great chicken masala. It was indeed worth waiting until it opened, and we did not have to wait once we arrived. Try the Mango dessert, too!

We had a very similar experience, H.

We didn’t get menus for about 10 minutes after we got there, and we ended up waiting an hour and a half for our food without really being acknowledged between order time and actually getting the food.

The wait staff seemed to be a little confused on their roles and even though the food was good, the treatment wasn't worth it.

I was very disappointed with the service and our treatment. I'll probably just stick to India Mahal on 9th and Pacific downtown Tacoma. Fast service, never crowded and the food is fantastic.

Our experience was STELLAR! We accidently stumbled upon the place while heading to Gateway... I figured what the heck... and OH MAN! We are going back again tonight!! Awesome food AND service. They were busy too, I think everyone there that night got good service, or I hope anyway.

My wife and I ate dinner tonight and the food was SUPERB! By far the best we have had in Tacoma. Fast and friendly service. Did not realize they were about to close and they kept the kitchen open for us. SOOO Happy to have them on 6th Ave.

I will not be eating at this establishment. I found they had posted a classified on cragslist looking for employees, when I went in to apply for the job 2 hours after the ad was posted the guy took one look at me and told me they weren't hiring. I went in dressed clean and professional, the only thing wrong with me was that I am obviously not Indian. I asked for the manager and I got the same response "No we are not hiring", they refused to even keep my resume on record in the event of an opening.
I found them to be quite rude and unprofessional.
Just my two cents

I won't eat there after hearing about complaints filed about his vet hospital. Complaints such as being mean to the animals and disposing dead animals in the dumpster after charging people to have them creamated.

My wife and I ate there on a Saturday night. Our *Caucasian* waitress was wonderful and helpful. All dishes were delightful. We went again today for the lunch buffet, and again everything was fantastic. Only complaint is lack of spicy dishes in the buffet. The vindaloo should be hot, hot, HOT!!!

As far as questioning the vet hospital this is ridiculous Dr. Walia is one of the best veterinarians in washington I have been going to him for years and will continue to go to his clinics as well as dining at his restaurant. Dr. Walia is very kind with my animals and to me and my family. If this person thinks these things about Dr. Walia and his vet hospital then I would say he doesnt need clients or customers like that.

Bombay Bistro was a fabulous experience! Not only was the environment one of the cleanest, fanciest, and most comfortable Indian Restaurants I have ever been to. But, the wait staff was attentive and friendly. I have always been a fan of this type of food. I have found that most of the restaurants I have eaten at have had a watered down taste or loaded with potato's and other fillers to save on cost. Not at Bombay Bistro, with every bite I was pleasantly surprised with the bursts of flavor and spices just as I had ordered them. I Love this restaurant!!

Further more in reading the other reviews what on earth does the owners other business have to do with his restaurant. These are personal reviews about food are they not? Everyone knows that CREMATIONS are done through a third party and not at the facility. I personally had my cat cremated at his hospital. He was returned to me and is currently sitting on my dresser at home, in an urn they provided. The hospital and the Doctor were extremely sympathetic towards myself and my cat. If they were doing something as awful as you claimed the city would be involved and not some hear say via an internet blog. Just my two cents.

I LOVE BOMBAY BISTRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The food is fabulous and the decor is beautiful. I have been to this restaurant several times now and every time everything has been perfect. When visiting this establishment you will find that the owners are very much involved in greeting and serving their customers and always taking that extra step to make sure that everyone is comfortable and happy with their whole experience dining here, I think that this is wonderful. I have to say this is by far the best Indian food I have ever had and I will continue to visit quite often.

I went to Bombay Bistro yesterday for the lunch buffet and the Butter Chicken was the best!!!!!! Actually I'm not much of a meat eater except for chicken so I was exceptionally happy to see all of the vegetable dishes as well as rice that they offered. Everything was fresh and hot and the wait staff was very helpful and attentive. I would recommend to anyone if you like Indian food you have got to try Bombay Bistro and go during the lunch buffet because their are so many things to try.
