After some relaxing and gardening Sarah and I went out for an early evening bike ride. We headed towards Point Defiance through the local neighborhoods and spotted what looked like a new coffee shop right in the middle of a quiet block. Without a wallet we headed straight home then hopped in the car to check it out. We arrived about an hour before closing and, upon walking in, knew we'd like Cavanaugh's before we even tasted the coffee.
We were served by "Latte" Linda who whipped up a couple tasty iced drinks and some great conversation. Since opening a couple weeks ago business has been good and rightly so because of the friendly service and comfortable setting. She told us the location was simply meant to be especially after being forced from a previous location in a strip mall on 6th and Orchard. Their new building has a corner store feel and is in a quiet neighborhood a couple block off the bend of N. Stevens. The building they're in was built in the 1920s and was formerly a hardware store, salon, daycare, and real estate office.
That kind of history lends itself well to Cavanaugh's being a great local stop for the surrounding neighborhoods and anyone who happens by. Owner/husband and wife team Linda and Mike did a fine job furnishing the place with items mostly found on eBay and Craig's List. I completely dig the idea of re-use but this place certainly avoided the 2nd-hand feel. Yes, there's wifi and it was plentiful enough to reach the tables outside covered by an awning that is wide enough that, even on a drizzly Northwest day, would keep you dry.
Stop on by and see Linda and Mike at Cavanaugh's for coffee, tea, chai and even grab a bite from their selection of salads, bagels, and sandwiches. Whether you walk (we live 7 blocks straight down the street), bike, or drive (plenty of off-street parking!) this is a great spot to wind down an evening or swing by on the way to work or when heading to or from Point Defiance. Oh, you can also grab the 11 or 51 bus since there's a stop right out their front door! Cheers to Cavanaugh's Coffee House and may they have plenty of success. As other neighbor's have told them, these kinds of places are sorely needed through out the neighborhoods of Tacoma.
If anyone tries it out be sure to let me know what you think in the comments below! I'm sure we'll be back and will probably make sure to walk any house guests, friends, and family down to our new neighborhood coffee shop. How charming is that?

I stopped by there yesterday on my way to Seattle (was taking the bus 11, and the stop was conveniently outside). I must say that the cappuccino I had there was very good, much better than most of the other places I have gone to. I give major kudos to them, and will be stopping there again!
