Constitutions Matter: Graffiti on Graffiti

Constitutions Matter - Mr. Baarsma, tear down this billboard!

So it appears repeated calls on the local Internets to enhance local "Constitutions Matter" billboards have been heeded. A couple tips led me to five such altered signs. The graffiti is crude and obviously purely done to send a direct response to the phrase Clear Channel has posted in protest of a now 10-year-old law on the books here in Tacoma. Here's what they say:

Constitutions Matter...

<- FOO

I'd Rather See Sky

Who is John Galt? (Link to Wikipedia)

Sky 08

Goodbye Bluesky

Mr. Baarsma, tear down this billboard!

There you have it. Anyone know of any others and messages that have been added to Clear Channels? Feel free to comment below or email me especially if you have pics.

These are great! I especially like the "Mr. Baarsma" one. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of these messages. Hopefully the Council is listening/seeing.

"So it appears repeated calls on the local Internets to enhance local "Constitutions Matter" billboards have been heeded"

Hard to tell how much. However, there is one in Proctor that says "Death to Clear Channel" and many more around town. Exit 133 forum has a picture of a few as well.

Certainly not from your normal tagger.

Its hard to know what to call it as there is the theoretically question of whether one can blight blight.

While this is all very funny and I'd like nothing more than to see all these billboards torn down, please remember that the activity captured in the photos is illegal. Don't start griping if someone you know gets arrested for these "enhancements"!

"...please remember that the activity captured in the photos is illegal."

I agree. Many of the billboards are in violation of the city municipal code.

Keeper: very true. Not sure who's doing it but snapping photos of them certainly does make good blog news.

I'm still confused on the 10 year old law?
can you link me to the full story?
I see so many of these billboards on my way to school i was wondering what the deal was.

In the words of C. Montgomery Burns: eeeexxxcellent!

Good to see someone's organized and activated.

Not a big fan of graffiti, but I love the pix.

I guess I will just have to thank Clear Channel for giving us plenty of space for "posting comments".

I noticed that a few have come down and been replaced by actuall advertizing. I believe it was the "John Gault" one that I noticed having been replaced first. I guess clear channel is deciding that advertizing is more profitable than free speach!

8/9/2007 @ 9:19am

Haha! Very true, Catherine. Me thinks it wasn't a successful "hearts and minds" campaign. Way to be savvy, Tacoma!

"I guess clear channel is deciding that advertizing is more profitable than free speach!"

That's a possibility. Another is that they have concluded their campaign worked.

Yet another possibility is that you are simply watching the pre-programed automatic responses of a multi national.

Most of them on my way home have been replaced with public service ads.

I always knew that C.C. cared about us and our community.

by Mr. Madera

8/10/2007 @ 8:58pm

I was just gonna say what Madera pointed out -- the "I'd rather see sky" is now a Bacardi ad.

Wonder if it was the dissent that made them change -- or the lack of income?

It would be much better if we fully moved from national socialism to marxist socialism and the billboards were taken over by the city and county to promote the workers paradise apartments/townhomes that are being built along transportaion corridors in Pierce County.

Constitutions do matter! And certainly not excluding the 1st amendment! and if that isn't violating the first amendment then we might as well legalize cooperate duck tape over our mouths! business are not the only ones that can run an add on a billboard and giving the power to the Tacoma city council to decide whats "appropriate" and whats not is the dumbest idea ive ever heard of! Has anyone ever watched channel 12? I think this is more about the Tacoma city council trying to gain more authority then it is getting rid of "distractions". If billboards are seriously effecting your driving and are imposing too much of a distraction for you to drive safely then you need to set down you keys and sit on a vertical stick. They just sell advertisement to the highest bidder, its called business.
