Countdown of concerts
Helping mark the beginning of the end of this semester, PLU's Vocal Jazz ensemble hit the stage in Lagerquist Hall tonight before a small, pre-Spring Break crowd. The group is 15 strong as of the semester's beginning when we held mid-year auditions. No vocalist was cut from the group but we added four talented (and young) voices. This concert had a mix of new tunes and ones already performed. It was a wise choice by our director to help ease the pressure on the rookies. Everyone did great tonight and performed beyond expectations. The current vibe with the group is a relaxed one that showed tonight through our more than laid-back version of The Best Is Yet To Come.
Tonight's concert also marks the beginning of the end of my membership in this choir. As a 2nd-year senior (going on a 3rd) I will make this my last semester in the group but will enjoy watching it grow from the comfort of the audience. We have two more gigs until Summer: one at the jazz festival in Reno and one more here on our home turf. Reno should be a gas because we've only traveled to the Idaho-based Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival for the last few years and, frankly, it's a pretty shabbily organized festival as far as I'm concerned. Our hopes are that Reno will prove an enriching experience where we'll surely s(w)ing our hearts out.
