D and A streets closing this month for construction
Two popular ways of bypassing all the stop lights downtown on Pacific will be closing this month for construction. D and A Streets at the end of the Thea Foss waterway [ map ] are soon going to be shut down for work.
From the City of Tacoma's website:
The City of Tacoma [...] will shut down East "D" Street by the middle of next week between the BNSF railroad track (at Dock Street) and Puyallup Avenue. The closure of D Street will last until May, 2007.
Additionally, BNSF has informed the City that it will close A Street (near Dock Street) on July 12 for two weeks so they can realign the railroad line in preparation for the future tracks.
So the only way to get down to Dock Street and the water and other attractions down there would be 15th Street or coming from the other end via Schuster Parkway. While A Street is closed I'll be sitting through lights on my way to pick Sarah up from work. It's all in the name of improvement... right?

(thanks Sarah!)

I have read their material but it still is not clear what they are really are going to do.
They have a picture on the update site but it doesn't make much sense.
We will be relying on you Kevin!

Well, they're building an overpass on "D" Street between Puyallup and Dock Street to bypass waiting for train traffic. I believe the ripple effect dwon towards "A" Street is some re-routing of tracks to make it possible to squeeze them under the overpass.
Should be great when it's done but it'll certainly cause some grief with "D" closed until May 2007 (or later, I'm sure).
It would be nice if the City would put up/link to a higher-resolution image of the work being done so we can all visualize a bit better.
