Enter the domains

With the temporary web server up I reached a configuration milestone today. I learned how to get the multiple domain names I host working again. The previous (now deceased) server was setup by friend Matt and, although I learned some of the many steps for configuration, I never learned them from the beginning. There, I already had a working system that was almost like a template from which I could stamp out other, albeit similar, options. I've always been good at looking at something and learning how to alter it just enough to be dangerous. I used to trace comics when I was little from my Odyssey magazine but if you set me loose to draw one from scratch, they turned into simple stick figures or simpler.

Same thing was true with language. My Spanish classes in high school were mostly unfulfilling because, it seems, my mind is more wired to recognition of patterns than it is generation of new ones. I could see, understand, and pronounce Spanish pretty well but I couldn't easily just wander off on my own and even form the most rudimentary of sentences.

I could go on and on about similar aspects of my life where this is true (e.g. dancing, jazz improv, etc) but I won't. This is getting depressing. ;) Actually, I know I can learn and create it just works better in some avenues of life than others. At any rate, I learned enough of the ins and outs of setting up our web server that today I flipped a switch and the various domains we host on our server started working. There's plenty more to do but this certainly helps stabilize things quite a bit and will make life easier for me once I buy parts to put together a permanent server.
