Century Park sketch examples [update]
I've received a few donor wall alternative/Century Park sketches from KFnet readers and I wanted to provide a couple as examples to show how other folks are doing it. Remember: I'm not looking for something to frame on my wall so simple is good. Here, without credit, description or commentary, are a few examples to get your juices flowing:
Here's how you can join in:
- Download a simple map of the area of the donor wall and Century Park
Map: Small | Large | Print | 3D New! - Sketch your ideas on paper or use something like MS Paint or PowerPoint on your computer
- Email your sketch and brief description to me
Try it out -- civic expression looks good on 'ya.
Update (2006-10-26 @ 11:59am)
The Tacoma Weekly just posted an article about this call for sketches and it actually sounds like Nicandri and Co. are willing to entertain what comes out of it. From the article:
Nicandri: "We are prepared to talk to anyone. If other people have ideas, we are willing to consider them. We are open to conversations."
Let's keep these ideas coming, folks, and let's score one for community involvement towards better outcomes here in Tacoma!

The second example is close to the one I was thinking of. However, the arch does not have to be overly expensive.
The example also shows how easy it is to keep vehicles from driving on the Bridge of Glass. The city, county and federal buildings all have examples of how to keep an area open to pedestrians while barring cars.
Yet, this was one of the reasons the museum gave for trying to justify building a brick wall in front of the bridge.
The county had someone who drove their car into the entrance of the building. They have now solved the problem with a few small barriers which still allow open and direct pedestrian access.
There are a number of straightforward designs that would work and satisfy Anderson's criteria she set out.

My design is awesome in the sense that it is in "upside-down 3d vision" Though I am saddened that Kevin had to pull out all her explanatory teeth/call-outs (freakin' nice guys with their nice guy meddling ;-p ).

Don't worry, Mr. Anderson, it'll be presented in all its glory next week. I'm trying to keep things pretty neutral for now just to whet people's appetite to contribute their own sketches.
The more the merrier!
