Don't like living in Tacoma?

Well then, take off, eh. That according to a somewhat pointed but right on post I found while browsing the Tacoma LiveJournal group. Snip:

make your own fun. invent and create yourself. you dont need trendy establishments to have fun. you dont need a bigger crowd of people *just like you* to get along with.

Harsh but true. To me this screams of the disconnect between everything north of Hwy 16 and I-5 and everything south. Heck, when I was a student out at PLU I had zero sense of identity with anything Tacoma. I wonder how that gap can be bridged so we're all just Tacomans?

I have mixed feelings. That post both annoyed me and spoke to me. I've lived in Tacoma all my life and I can't stand when people complain - I mean, come on, if you really knew Tacoma you'd know how much it has to offer. It's a neat place. On the other hand, I've been here so long that I'm dying to go somewhere new. I'm probably just sick of Parkland. Yeah.

I know what you mean. Being in Parkland just for school and work was a bit too much for me. I felt totally disconnected from anything truly "Tacoma" out there. Moving into town and changing to a job downtown really lended to my sense of belonging and even ownership of this town.

Every place has something nice to give to everybody. There must be something strange or beautiful there that worth to be reminded. I was borne in a very small town, but it is so strange because I hate it for offering me nothing and I still miss it a lot. I simply can’t take off my mind out of there. After all I lived there lots of years.

I agree to the post to some degree...but something of great value doesn't come easy- I think Tacoma is on the throes of becoming a great city- we wont be here discussing TACOMA if we don't care about this city- I liken it to the "growing pains" - so I am excited to see what happens next- I mean, there's always something happening here. It's not a dead town . It's alive..breathing new life.

Luv its history- and it is making history once again. I would stick around and be proud and be a part of it. I am watching. Participating in my own small way. I can complain about the lack of retails downtown , high end stores, good architectural design, 5-star hotels, etc- but the vision is there. It is gonna happen. Let's be aptient. Everything is a process. I have faith in the government of this town. I can't wait to see how Tacoma sculps its own IDENTITY. It' beginning- but it takes careful planning.

PS: Congrats to KFNet and Exit133 as catalysts to this transformation. Kudos!

byt he way, I am very proud to be a TACOMAN. I plan to be and will ever be a Tacoman. Although, can I really say that even if I have only been here two years?( from Chicago)
