Einstein sucks

At the agreement of Dr. Leake and myself, we allowed for a sleep buffer this morning and opted not to come in to the office until 10am. We spent the morning and afternoon trying to FTP the data we did gather up at Kitt Peak from Dr. Leake's computer to a UNIX machine named Einstein. Well, I'm sure the Nobel Prize winner didn't design this computer because it's stupid! I tried everything I could figure to try and get the files across campus. Nothing worked. Dr. Leake picked up her phone and called the network techs for VSU. They informed her that Einstein is only set up to be access by IP addresses which it recognizes. It's a supposed safety feature to keep outsiders from messing with the anything but Nobel Prize winning computer. It seems silly to me to think that VSU would want to keep people from Einstein. It only holds folders with data of stars and astroids collected by people at that school. What's wrong with the sharing of information? Also, a security measure like the one I mentioned is only going to keep out people like me - non-hackers. A true hacker would probably have no problem getting past the security system which probably only serves as a pacifier which the senior staff suck on to feel safe about the "terrors" technology bring to an acedemic institution.

Nothing much else up for today. I'm back in the humid and glare plentiful environment of southern Georgia. It's good to be back but it'll be even better to venture to Florida early on the morning of the 20th to see my first Space Shuttle launch. Dr. Leake, Erika and I will be taking the trip to see STS-93 liftoff with a payload partially teamed by a VSU grad as well as the first ever female Shuttle commander, Eileen Collins.

So besides catching up on the website, my day was thus. I also talked to my cousin and set up the rough dates during which he's going to take me to the Florida and Georgia coasts and perhaps around Atlanta. I can't wait to see him and the sights.
