Exit133 goes pro

Ads on Exit133.comSince re-entering student-hood by going back to school, Derek over at Exit133 may again be feeling those days of Top Ramen and Mac 'n Cheese dinners anyone in college does. ;) With the size of student loans these days, 'ya can't blame a guy for looking for a little extra revenue. Some work retail, some submit to mysterious medical studies, and those with websites add ads. Google Ads now show up on individual blog entries on his site tucked between the entry content and the comments section. These kinds of ads are definitely the best kinds out there because of their simplicity and lack of flashing "punch the monkey" games. Between ads and Exit133 LLC, hopefully Derek will be able to stay on a strictly non-Ramen diet.

I've thought about ads on my site here and there but have two issues that prevent me. The first is my site's design. It's already hurting from being a complete cobble over the last couple years and needs a fresh new start both in visual and technical design. PS: If anyone out there would like to take a stab at a new KFnet homepage, it's all yours! Anyway, I'd want ads on my site to blend in pretty well. Second, I don't like ads. I'm a pretty open guy that frankly enjoys doing web stuff both for work and for fun. My own site is certainly on the "for fun" side of things and I hope never to succomb or even need any revenue from my site. Despite all the Tacoma-related stuff I put up, this is my personal website and I hope to keep it open and engaging without needing anything in return. Believe me, every [non-spam] comment I get with an entry is payment enough.

Could this, however, be the future of Tacoma blogs as they grow more popular? What do you think of ads on blogs? Do you ever click on them?

An Aside
Ever seen this? Since we're on the topic of blogs and money why not have some fun and find out what a particular blog is worth? Here's mine and Exit133. What about super popular blogs like Waiter Rant or BoingBoing? Yeah, they win.

So does that mean we will get paid for tips and story ideas?

Ooo, interesting idea. That would certainly be a way to up the ante a bit. Kinda' like a reward for tips that lead to an entry.

There are ways to advertise without being too obnoxious, but it is difficult.

Please no banner ads.
