Friday night relaxing
We mixed things up a bit after work today. Instead of meeting on the Tacoma Link I headed for the car then swung by to pick Sarah up. Why the change? To buy us some time while our favorite Thai restaurant prepared our take-out dinner. We picked up the good then transported them back to the house and ate them. We also picked up a DVD to watch and we picked The Transporter. I thought it was a pretty fun flick overall but there were some definite problems that didn't make it a standout smash for me. Now, I know it's an action movie, but there were plot holes large enough to fly the shuttle through. Like, why was the Chinese girl being transported to one of the bad guys to begin with? I mean, I'm a somewhat smrt guy but it wasn't obvious enough for me to figure out. I could take plenty of guesses but none would be certain. I only find this a problem because this transporting of a live package is what got our protagonist into all the action-packed trouble the movie revolved around.
So, about the action, it was pretty cool. Only thing missing? An appropriate soundtrack. A couple sequences begged for anything more exciting than some half-tempo bass funk groove. I've seen more effective use of classical music in action sequences! Seriously Stanley Clarke, I'm not a very picky guy when it comes to movies but we've got to have a matching soundtrack. How did you get this past the producers, especially Luc Besson? The soundtrack to The Fifth Element was spot on at every step along the way and I'm sure he would've noticed during this flick too.
Oh well, I nag. I did enjoy the editing and choreography of most of the fight scenes and had just enough fun to consider seeing The Transporter 2 when it comes out next week. I only hope it has a better soundtrack. Hopefully Mr. Clarke isn't on the job. (I checked, he's not -- it's some single-named guy (or gal) called Replicant -- with a name like that his/her music has to be cool!)
