Welcome to the Neighborhood, Friesenburgers

Friesenburgers Tacoma signWelcome indeed. It's always great to see quality business and eats come to the Dome District and Friesenburgers is a promising addition. After hearing they were finally open earlier this week some co-workers and I decided to try 'em out.

Inside the place is simple and clean with only a little clutter near the soda fountain and condiments. They don't have their price board hanging yet so I'm sure there are some little touches soon to come. Menus were up at the counter and include choices for breakfast and the expected lunch and dinner fare. Burgers start at just over $4 on up for their hearty choices. I'm happy to see them offer a buffalo burger, cold sandwiches, grilled and (get this) deep fried hot dogs.

I went for the namesake burger the Friesenburger. It's a little more spendy at $7 but I got that with a soda and large, golden and crispy fries for just under $10. The kitchen got my order out in 10 minutes or so and everyone's order came out correct. The Friesenburger itself is a worthy adversary (for my cardiovascular system) with a half pound of meat from two patties, cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon and a fried egg. All the smells from the kitchen made me hungry while we waited and the taste didn't disappoint. The bun had a little trouble holding everything but that would be my only beef. My burger seemed to be cooked well and hit the spot. Surprisingly I wasn't too full either since the portion of fries wasn't huge nor were they too greasy which made me happy.

Anyway, definitely worth a try. Six of us from our office all seemed satisfied and I counted 15 folks in there but the time we left.

Anyone know how the other new burger joint, Mary's Burger Bistro , is doing? Haven't heard much about it, which in this town usually means .... well you know.

We've been back a few times and all seems pretty well. Service is speedy and the food is really tasty. Plus, unlike Friesenburgers, Mary's is open for dinner 'til 7pm.

Didn't know they were open that late. Thought they still closed at 2pm or 3pm, thanks.

"...but that would be my only beef."

Ha ha!

I went into Mary's 2 weeks ago, and the burger I got to go (with double onions!) pretty much satisfied my desire for a damn near perfect burger...just the right amount of sloppy and drippy, but it held together until the last bite. That sounds like the punch line to a bad joke, but the burger ruled.

I tried out Friesenburgers this afternoon and must have been there on an off day because I found the whole experience rather disappointing.

There were MAYBE five people in there, yet it took me half an hour to get my cheeseburger with no tomato (which arrived with tomato and without cheese). The burger itself was all dried out and gristle-y and the fries were cold and rather uninspiring.

I suppose everyone's entitled to an off day, but on the rare occasion I actually crave a burger, I think I'll head to Mary's.

I'm sure there are plenty of first week or so bugs to be worked out. Hopefully they'll serve to impress on subsequent visits. I'm excited there are a couple non-chain options for a good burger in SoDo.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but can't we leave the term SoDo to Seattle? Technically, isn't that part of Tacoma actually NORTH of the dome? I propose that section be called "Beyond Thunderdome" or "Awesome Domeville" or maybe even "Funkytown". "Dome-a-Loma-Ding-Dong" might work, too.

"Dome-a-Loma-Ding-Dong" is great.

I know what you mean but I really like how it neatly encompasses an area that's partially Hilltop, the Brewery District, and Dome District all in one nice 4-letter word. That area truly is the south part of downtown rather than the South End or South Tacoma.

Thought "Beyond Thunderdome" is pretty sweet...

I would like to thank you all for making us feel welcome in the neighborhood. A special thank you to KevinFreitas. For writing such a nice review, given it appears you were in on the second full day. The first days were not up to the standards we wish to have. We have been making changes everyday in response to customer comments and plan to keep doing so for sometime.

To Mandi, Thank you for your comment too. It is very important for us to learn what we are doing wrong and make the adjustments as needed. Keep in mind we do more than just burgers. We do a fish basket meal that comes with our own secret tarter sauce recipe.

As a thank you, When you try us next time, mention this blog and we will give you a 10% discount. (add standard disclaimer here)

Friesenburgers is the IN-N-OUT of the Northwest! Yummy! Looking forward to the shakes and ice cream treats! Heard rumors about a deep-fried Twinkie with chocolate to be appearing soon?!? Yummy-Yum-Yum!

Hey all,

Went there with my wife yesterday and was amazingly surprised. It was like an In-N-Out burger and reminded my wife of a burger from her childhood. We also shared the fried hot dog and it was an amazing treat. The steak fries were perfect, but we were too full to try the 'fried twinkie' that looked sensational. Next time!

The Deep-Fried Twinkies at Friesenburgers are out of this world. Something to put on your "must-try-this-soon" list. They really are outstanding, and you will come back for more...we did. Also, the price is very reasonable.
