Downtown loses window into crime

Though intrepid in her efforts and faithful to the safety of her part of downtown, Laura Hanan is nolonger posting images of local crime online. In an email, she wrote:

...I don't think it is a good idea to put the pictures up anymore because the threats are becoming so vicious. Hopefully the truth will come out, but I doubt I will still be living in Tacoma when it does.

She recently took her email campaign of images of local crime captured with her video camera to Flickr -- though her account now stands empty. The more public display, though obviously controversial, was a cry for the help she wants to see the area between 8th and 9th on Pacific get. For someone who's been an absolute hawk to have to fear for herself is a complete shame. Not on her but on the scum that riddle her downtown neighborhood night after late night.

Thanks for your diligent eye, Laura, and let's hope it doesn't have to get worse down there before some changes are made.

the brief illumination Laura provided into the dark world of indifference, apathy and sorrow will forever be forgotten.

And at the end of the day, at least we have a better idea of who are friends are.

Thanks for your great work in the Theater District Laura, its a better place because of you!

Your efforts have resulted in more arrests than the efforts of any volunteer Tacoman resident I know of.

She shouldn't have had to do this--the city needs to wake up and increase the budget for the police.

The budget is there, They need to increase incentives to retain and recruit quality officers.

The police department needs to restore the swing shift bicycle officers to downtown - one of the only recomendatiions put forth by the New Tacoma Neighborhood Council that has not been followed.

Jun. 5--This is the story of how far off track a pair of promising real estate developments can fall. And of the continuing struggle to put them right.

Fortunately, these entwined stories are not yet fully told.

Steve Morrison and his partners have invested $6.5 million to renovate the rundown Hotel Olympus Apartments at 815 Pacific Ave. John and Laura Hanan have put $1.5 million into restoring the adjoining Rowland Building into upscale urban lofts. These projects represent the exact type of private investment in downtown residential properties that Tacoma is working hard to attract.

But both of these neighboring developments are in trouble.

The Olympus failed to find the senior low-income residents for which it received tax credits. In December, it reorganized as general low-income and disabled housing. To date, it's had no success leasing the beautifully appointed classic restaurant space critical to its financial success.

The Hanans have filed two letters of complaint to the city about Olympus residents and patrons of the after-hours club Detour at 821 Pacific. Their objections hearken to the bad old days of drugs and...
