Humane Humans: A True Story
June 12th was Matt Cameron's (one of my good friends and future roommate) birthday. He celebrated at home with various relatives and friends. Everything went like a normal party; dinner, dessert (with candles, of course), opening presents, and a little bit of music performed by the birthday-boy and his friends. One of the friends was to leave on a two month trip to Europe the next day so we opted to spend the final portion of the evening at Carrow's.
Conversation went from one direction to another whilst yet more dessert was ingested by our party. As the cups were cleaned and utensils used as objects of one's fidgety habits, we decided to pay our bill and leave. The manager (we think he was anyway) walked by our table and overheard something. "Is it someone's birthday?" he asked in a normal tone. We all answered "yes" and gestured toward Matt. "Then it's on me," the manager reported.
All slightly stunned, we made our gratitude known to the man. Frank, however, was hesitant. "I -- was going to pay for him though," he uttered with sincerity towards the manager.
"You were going to pay for him?" again inquired the manager. Frank answered in the affirmative and the manager returned, "Then you're a nice guy. Yours is on me too," and he walked away.
As we proceeded to the cashier to pay our respective bills, Frank waited behind for a moment. "I just wanted to thank you again for what you did," he said.
