iBoat Tacoma hits the water
After recently exclaiming "I wish we'd get more water-related attractions around here," while out with the Photo Gang this weekend I found a new service down on the Foss. iBoat Tacoma charters their 21' electric boat down on the Thea Foss. The little electric boat that could, christened Nowhere Fast, can carry up to 12 passengers on cushy, heated seats. It's enclosed to protect from the elements and has CD and iPod tune capabilities (BYOCDs or iPod). You can rent the vessel for your next party or business get together for $85 an hour with special price breaks at 4 and 8 hours.
I chatted with owner and operator Kristine Nims who says Tacoma was behind when it comes to utilizing these kind of electric boats. She says Seattle runs a few of the craft on Lake Washington, Gig Harbor will start a free water taxi service with them soon, and near the builder Duffy Boats in Newport Beach, CA there are 1,200 on the water. Her boat Nowhere Fast arrived last week and she's getting to know it with friends on brown bag lunch cruises this week.
Why electric? The engine is quiet which more easily allows for conversation and creates less noise pollution than gas motors. Aside from that, Kristine didn't want to spend the time/money messing with gas. She says a single charge that allows the boat to run for 10 hours costs a mere $1 in electricity.
Kristine thinks Tacoma is a great place for this kind of amenity for tourists and locals alike. With Tacoma's thriving business and budding residential community she says iBoat offers our city a little piece of Venice along the Foss.
Keep your eyes on their website and blog for deals now and in the off-season. Since the boat is fully enclosed and heated she hopes to be able to offer discounts that will keep people on the water in her boat nearly year-round.
Fun fact: Kristine lives on Salmon Beach but, until now, didn't own a boat.
