Fun with marshmallows in your microwave

So this is what happens when I let Sarah have friends over to play. I swear, kids these days. We go out for some dinner. That's cool. She helps him learn to play bass guitar. How enriching. They want to have smores. Slightly odd but still a fun idea. From there it was all just plain fun. Combine this giddy, child-like mentality with a microwave and a need to heat up marshmallows and, a few plates later, you have a bit of a mess and some nuked, puffy blobs.

Thing is that marshmallows tend to expand to easily 3 or 4 times their size when subjected to the inside of a nuke box. They don't really seem to explode but swell up a great deal. Regular, 1 inch or so marshmallows do the best while the small ones aren't nearly as exciting. Don't believe me. Hit up a search for "marshmallow microwave" on YouTube or Google Video and be convinced that there's something for everyone out there on the internets.

Funny thing is, Sarah and company realized that you could measure the distribution of microwave energy and thus heating focus by laying out a large plate of small marshmallows one layer deep and hit them for 30 seconds or so. Whichever ones puff up the most is where the most microwaving goes on. You can keep that in-mind next time your doing precision cooking with your microwave. I'm sure it'll help that bag of popcorn come out superb. Happy marshmallow melting!
