Merry Christmas from the Freitai

2007 Freitas Xmas card

Happy Holidays!

Who are "The Freitai", you might ask? Well, they're a couple of nerdy people (hence the video game-themed card above) that have jokingly taken on that moniker instead of the more proper version of "Freitas" with a trailing apostrophe and having to pronounce an extra "s" in the plural. Please expunge all groans from your person then proceed to the continuation of this holiday communication document below. Bleep bloop beep.

Despite the joys of catching whichever airborne bug was circulating on any given business trip she would take, Sarah made a giant leap to a new job this year. Instead of working for a multi-billion dollar corporation she now makes her mark at a fast-growing small company in downtown Tacoma. Sarah brings her strategic experience to help manage and guide their success. It also happens to be the same place Kevin works and they're loving every minute of it. No, really, they are. Rather than tension like that from a ticking time bomb, Sarah and Kevin are fortunate to enjoy a partnership that works as friends, lovers, and co-workers.

With a new job comes new time for life outside of work. Sarah's been able to geek out with hobbies like owning her friends at all things Wii and voraciously devouring volumes of comic books and graphic novels. She also got to travel on her own terms with a relaxing jaunt down to Cabo and a luxurious getaway with her mom to Victoria, BC.

Work isn't all Sarah and foosball for Kevin but instead constantly presents rewarding challenges with quality (and sometimes quirky) clients. Though programming less these days, Kevin enjoys more of a role spearheading projects and mentoring junior developers through them. He still volunteers his time helping friends and local organizations get online and even created a community-based website that pulls together nearly 50 bloggers with thousands of events, photos and videos all centered around Tacoma.

Despite all this desk duty Kevin also manages to write for three different blogs. He stays civically involved through his virtual activities and steps into "real world" roles as a guest lecturer and conference speaker from time to time. To stay active away from the screen in the non-snowy months Kevin took up skimboarding the salty, shallow waters near Tacoma. He may be the oldest, baldest guy out there but the kids instead revere him as someone who must know what he's doing. Which he doesn't.

The Freitai household is in fine form this season. A new garden in the backyard yielded a single squash and shirtloads of tiny, tasty Roma tomatoes. Their entire front yard is also newly landscaped thanks mostly to a couple of talented and hardworking friends from Portland and a weekend they helped out "Extreme Makeover" style. Kitties Colby and Lulu are great and coping well with a new edition to the family -- a spunky, bright blue parakeet Kevin rescued from the alley near work they named Thea. The Freitai even watch some sports once in a while now -- not because of any favorite team but instead because it looks so darn good on their HD TV. Sarah and Kevin did peel themselves away from their beloved HD and Tacoma to hit the snowboarding slopes a few times and enjoy their anniversary down by the bay in San Francisco.

Please take care of each other, seize the day, and have a wonderful winter season.

Love,

Sarah and Kevin Freitas
