Murry Morgan Bridge closed tomorrow
The BE Daily is reporting that the Murray Morgan Bridge will be closed tomorrow between 7am and 5pm and next Wednesday and Thursday. Sounds like some overdue work is to be done replacing cables that hold up million pound each counterweights. Snip:
Crews will replace a wire tomorrow. The same scenario will take place next week with a wire cable from the southwest corner of the bridge. There are 64 cables on the bridge -- 58 of which have been in service for 95 years.
The bridge will completely close to traffic during work hours while crews inspect the cables that hold up the two, million-pound counterweights that facilitate the opening and closing of the bridge for marine traffic. The last inspections show that cable deterioration is progressing.
Because of its age, the Murray Morgan Bridge is scheduled for inspection every six months. Typically, WSDOT inspects its bridges at least once every two years.
Glad to see that, unlike it's stuck-up cousin down the street across the Hylebos, the City is taking care of this aging yet vital structure. 'Twould certainly be a shame to have a million pounds of counterweight come crashing down on a tall ship next summer.
