Museum of Glass now... Museum of Glass

No, seriously. According the the Trib, since 2000 it's been officially named the "Museum of Glass: International Center for Contemporary Art" -- not that anyone around here would know that. Turns out MoG wants to focus more on the "glass" portion of their name since it sounds like they've been getting complaints from visitors expecting more art in that medium than others. My wife, a former Tacoma Art Museum intern, has always enjoyed pointing out that TAM has more Chihuly than MoG. I'm sure that confuses more than a few visitors to either.

2/22 - Glass museum tightens name and focus, TNT

'Tis a fine bit of marketing, indeed, to simply name the museum the way everyone refers to it anyway. Reminds me of another local naming issue from month's past...

Yes, I remember reading about the article in the TNT where visitors would stream into the "MOG" and ask where is the glass exhibits were. They were told that they had very little but that there were other obscure but exciting exhibits.

For years, I would (correctly I believe) tell visitors to Tacoma that the best displayes were outside on the bridge and free.

Talk about failing to provide what the customer wants. Somehow the management had decided that there were exhibits that people "should" be seeing rather than what they want to see.

Yes, Cassioposa is right about the Tacoma Arts Museum. They had a sign for years, and perhaps still do, that stated that there were glass exhibits always on display. They also used to have an incredible Chihuly for viewing.

Observing the few tourists that do stroll into Tacoma, the only thing I have seen them go ga ga over is the glass.

They can't get enough.

I agree Erik -- most of the best stuff is outside on the bridge or in the William Traver gallery next door or at the nearby Union Station. Can't beat the prices there either!

To confirm (I visit TAM every couple-three months when new exhibits appear), TAM does have a permanent display of Chihuley glass -- namely the baskets -- but other works do show up at random times; one recent mixed media modern art exhibit had some Mille Fiore pieces in the middle.

Saw the MoG = MoG article and thought the same thing, "that's what we call it anyway."
