My first Firefox extension

Since beginning my quest to write a Firefox extension yesterday morning I've been toiling at it for about 15 hours. Today, at noon, I successfully implimented by first [useful] Firefox extension. I'll put it up for download once I've had a chance to smoke test it with co-workers and friends alike. I'm pretty confident this will be a must-have for any like-minded web developers out there. Stay tuned...

In other news, the basement is dry. Our landlord had a plumber come out yesterday and Sarah relayed to me that he said the stoppage was 80' down the system likely toward a large tree's roots under the edge of our driveway in the neighbor's yard. Whatever he cleared we'll find out if he killed the tree if it's lovely yellow leaves persist all year -- I'm hoping that's certainly not the case. Anyway, it's nice to have a dry basement wherein I can shuttle laundry to and fro without worrying about dropping any clean articles.

Update - Here's the link (2004-12-03 @ 7:30pm)
Try out the Ruler Mode extension (24.3K) and let me know what you think (by leaving comments below). There are known issues but I'll leave those until I get some feedback and once I put up a page about the extension. The long and the short of it: click the ruler icon to enter ruler mode then click twice to draw out a measured box. Click the ruler button again to close ruler mode.

Update - No more dryness (2004-12-03 @ 7:56pm)
Oh, and our basement actually isnt' dry. Had to call the landlady tonight again and her plumber man is coming out tomorrow at the butt crack (I know, I know) of the morning at 8am. Guess I won't be up 'til 12:30am tonight working on the ruler extension.

Hi Kevin

Very nice little extension.

One of the things that I could really use it for is to see if things line up, pixel-perfect.

This ruler helps, but combining it with a "looking glass" type zoom window, so you can get even closer, would be even more helpful.

I've tried combining it with the ColorZilla zoom function, but that zoom functionality doesn't quite work, as it doesn't scale up the pixel distances, only the text size. So for the nitty gritty details, it looks like I still have to use a screen grabber, then look at things in Photoshop. Bummer.

But thanks for the great work.

That's a great suggestion though Lars, thanks! I'm putting together a page for my extension with features and known issues that I'll be sure to post here.

Also, just out of curiousity, how did you find my site? Cheers! ~ Kevin

Kevin, that's a badass extension! And from someone I know (or at least, once knew). Word to your mom.

Thanks Kris! I pass by your site once in a while but haven't lately until last night since it appeared that you took most of it down. New one looks good though!

I'm going to write a page about the extension in my webdev articles (http://www.kevinfreitas.net/pro/articles) and publicize it on a couple lists this week.

Hope all is well with you and your family -- how's Janet doing these days?
