My Video Game Told Me To Vote Obama

Name that space - Step II: Voting
After gathering a list of possible names for Pacific Plaza the time has come to put them to a vote. Head over the the [brand new] polling section and toss your choice in. No sign-ins or private info of any kind needed. I just want to get a sense for how folks here and elsewhere think we might name a great place in our downtown area.
Thanks and results will be available when polling ends next Monday early morning.
(Oh, and if something doesn't seem to work right please drop a comment below or email me since I just built the polling system last night -- thanks! And, heck, if you like it, let me know that too.)

Someone suggested (albeit a little late for voting) "Pacific Steps". Has a nice, welcoming ring to it but keep the locale in the name.

I voted!
I even tried to vote twice to test out your voting programs, but alas, it stopped me.
Nice work. I can't want to see the result.

Crafty, aren't I? That's what you get when you let a web programmer like me create new features for myself.

Whatever, comes out of the poll, I think you should send it to the city so that they can consider the results before the issue is decided on 8/22/2006.
This isn't just about a name, it is an issue of public participation and the relevance of blogging.

Pacific Steps....isn't that the name of the (famed/failed) Opus project from a few years back?

Ooo -- dunno. I certainly don't want a name with bad karma.
I also just got an email back from the contact listed on the renaming agenda item. More later...

Erik: I agree and the results will certainly be forwarded to the council along with my presence at the meeting. I'd love to get a group together to go with but we can talk about that next week.

Eek -- yea. Not the best. It'll be interesting to see what comes out on top. Tell your friends to vote -- the more I get the better the case will be to the city council.

Looks like participation is picking up. The more people voting the better.
I think it's important step to Tacoman's taking true ownership of the plaza.

Hey Kevin, any chance you could post the voting options somewhere permanently for those of us who have already voted and can no longer access the list? I try to make a habit of going back and seeing what I did wrong the first time. Keeps me humble.

Good point.
In the pre-voting page, you might want to list the voting options.

I can rig the voting page to show the options but not allow re-votes. I'll post a comment here when I've got something going. Probably tonight at the earliest.
OR...
Should I simply show the results to anyone who's already voted? Would that spoil the fun of revealing them later or is everyone instant-gratification focused enough that they want it now?

I would not show the results yet.
However, you could list the choices on the pre-voting page so people can see the different ones.

How about Chihuly Plaza?
Maybe he would exchange the naming rights for some cool glass on the Plaza. Sure would brighten the place up and increase the hip/art factor.

Pacific Steps was the name of a proposed 20-story office development that was proposed back in 2000 that was supposed to go up next to the Luzon building. Please don't bring back any bad memories!

How about Chihuly Plaza?
Interesting.
However, I am starting to warm to the idea of the are being named with the word art or museum in it.
The nice thing with the word museum is that it has the benefit of having an interesting name and give some geographic reference as well as there are a number of museums in the area.
Museum Plaza?
Museum Square?

I read in one of the comments that we can see the City Council meeting on streaming video??(right term?) on computer...can you tell me the website to go to. I plan to be there on August 22nd, but want to send the link to other friends who can't get there. My 18 yr. old is off to WSU tomorrow...he really enjoyed your pictures Kevin. I know this will be a site he will be looking at for more shots of home. Thanks again for your talent and your efforts for the city.

Robert: I agree. Something with Pacific in it would do nicely.
Ronnie: Unfortunately, I don't believe the council meetings are streamed live over the web but can be watched live on TV Tacoma on local cable. Otherwise, there is video of past meetings on their website at http://cityoftacoma.org/Page.aspx?hid=2005
