North Slope board doesn't want steam plant
North Slope Historic District board chairman Mashall McClintock expresses the group's opposition to the proposed MultiCare steam plant adjacent Wright Park in a letter to the editor today. He calls out MultiCare's lack of "civic spirit" in the matter. From the letter:
In the past, Tacoma's businessmen sought to build up their city. Charles Wright donated the land for the park that bears his name. Clinton Ferry donated the statues he purchased in Paris. A.C. Mason built bridges across Garfield, Buckley and Puget gulches and gave them to the city.
Although these businessmen benefited in the long run, several generations have appreciated their gifts and Tacoma values them still. MultiCare demonstrates none of their civic spirit. Rather, its proposal shows its intent to degrade the legacy that Wright and Ferry left to Tacoma.

What do you think? Does a four story building with nine story smokestacks belong adjacent to Wright Park?

Congratulations to North Slope Historic District, Metro Parks Commissioner Ryan Mello and other citizens and leaders who have opposed this poorly designed proposal.
I had thought a few months ago that the period where Tacoma has allowed the building of unsightly projects such as the parking garages was over. Yet, they keep rolling on out, one at a time.
Placing the exhaust tailpipe of the facility against Wright Park is not very considerate.
By the way, months later, Multi Care has still not responded to the most basic questions about the running of their gas steam plant.

Being a newcoming to this city, I didn't feel I had an understanding yet to speak out against this steam plant. But, my God, a steam plant against Wright's Park. I walk around Wright Park and think, what a jewel this is. Why is this park so neglected? This is Tacoma's central park yet it feels abandoned.
I'm glad people with important voices are speaking up.

Here's some quotes (fair use) from the letter:
"The park is a historic landmark. Historic churches surround the site, and two National Historic Districts – Stadium/Seminary and North Slope – are a block away. Yet MultiCare treats the area as its private industrial park by planning to locate a four-story plant with nine-story smoke stacks here."
"This proposed plant is extraordinarily poor urban planning, and we urge the City Council to close loopholes that removed any effective public review of the plans."
