About the Location:
Constructed in 1893, Tacoma's Old City Hall has been an esteemed symbol of Tacoma since its first Renaissance period at the turn of the 19th century. In 1905, the tower was fitted with a clock fixture and chimes; a gift of former Ambassador to France, Hugh C. Wallace, in memory of his late daughter, Mildred. It served as the Honorable City Hall for over sixty years, to finally be abandoned in 1959, then left vacant for over 10 years.
Finally, through the urging of Tacoma's citizens, the beloved icon was saved from demolition and given national historic prominence in the early 1970's. Soon after, a San Francisco developer purchased the building and refurbished it into a professional office center, which it remained until 2005. The current owner, The Stratford Company, LLC purchased the Old City Hall amidst Tacoma's second Renaissance with the goal of repositioning the landmark into downtown Tacoma's premier residential property - The Renaissance at Old City Hall. City Artwork Exhibit:
An exhibit of photographs taken at Old City Hall will be featured in the spring rotation of artwork at the City Hall gallery located on the 12th floor of the Municipal Building and at the Tacoma Public Utilities gallery. All participants are encouraged to submit artwork created on this photo safari to the exhibit. Also available to participants is the possible opportunity to display your photographs through The Stratford Company for artistic, historical, and promotional purposes. Details of these opportunities will be made available to photographers on March 13.
