Photos ~ Weekend front yard makeover
This weekend wasn't much for resting from the work week. Instead, Sarah and I set out to re-create our front yard with the help of a couple great friends and local resources. We started in on the lawn Saturday morning tearing up all the sod in our front yard with a cutting machine. I had the fortune of manning the machine while Sarah, our friends who happen to own a landscaping business Clara and Dan from Portland, and Sarah's mom moved the newly sheered sod into the truck. We hauled off the unwanted grass a couple times and returned a couple times with new dirt and a couple tons of rock.
Sunday we finished everything off leveling and compacting the dirt for the yard, laying square by square of new turf grass down, then planting some plants and spreading out rocks for our dry stream bed. It was tons of work but we couldn't have done it without the expertise and equipment of Dan and Clara. There's still some finishing touches like moving some plants, getting some more, and laying down some recycled arborist wood chips but huge progress was made. It was also great to make use of some local businesses and restaurants in the process of making our yard look great and keeping our tummies full. Here's a list of the places we utilized:
- Portland Avenue Nursery for a bunch of the lovely plants and grasses
- Emerald Turfgrass delivered the patches of pretty green stuff that's now our yard
- Puget Sound Pizza to kick off the weekend right with Sarah, her mom and ensie
- Knapp's gave us some energy to get started Saturday morning
- Purdy Topsoil for taking and recycling old sod and having great prices for that and dirt and rock
- Galanga Thai always offers an excuse to visit especially when hungry guests are in town
- Farrelli's Pizza to get our Sunday lunchtime ranch fix
- Duke's ChowderHouse to finish off the weekend with some amazing chowder and fish 'n chips
Here are some pics of the finished product we're so dang happy with. I'll put up some in-process shots soon once I have the time-lapse of the weekend put together.

Wow. One of the biggest changes seems to be from photo 1 to photo 2, before the work even started. What did you do between the photos? Spray your lawn green? :)
