Photos ~ The Ruins of Gottschalks

Standing like semi-grand reminders of what was, I snapped some shots of the ruins of the old Gottschalks off 6th and Pearl. There's not much left aside from the old decorative pillars and a large cement pad. I often drove by, never went in, and always wondered what such an oddly named department store was doing in that part of town. Shopping of that kind doesn't happen away from the mall, does it? Such a thing would be unthinkable in the Westgate or downtown area, right?

According to those in the know at my gym, Gottschalks will be replaced by an L.A. Fitness in the spring.

It wasn't a bad place. I had been know to pop in there in the event I couldn't find a pair of socks without a hole in them. I think I even bought a pair of shorts or two there.

That is a strange location for a Gottschalks. Usually I think of the Lakewood Mall, er. Town Centre location when it comes to that store chain.

I am pretty sure there is a banner hanging off of a fense along Pearl announcing the future home of LA Fitness.
