Tacoma Photo Gang - Shot da Tideflats (update 5)

The second meet-up of the Tacoma Photo Gang went well today and we had record attendance! Thirteen of us met and headed into the Tideflats to shoot some shots. With simple maps I provided we carpooled in five cars and made our way to four spots. First was the west end of the Hylebos Bridge where we also saw a view of the fabled Kalakala ferry. From there we went to an old fire department building near the Port of Tacoma on 11th Street. Further down 11th we spent some time under and around the Murray Morgan Bridge and were even invited out onto the docks to see some of the dragon boats. Last stop today was down "D" Street near the marina.

The weather held well today with just a dash of rain when we started. Our hearty bunch stuck together all the way through despite some rather chilly breezes. Anyway, enough with the jibba jabba, here are my photos. Keep an eye on this page as I'll also be adding links to other folks' shots as they hit teh Intarwebs.

As always Kev, Great shots! You really captured some wonderful texture and feeling of the outing today. I'll be trying to get my photos up some time soon. I'm now part of a gang. Kick Ass!

Nice pictures as always.

However, I wish there were more of the Kalakala ferry.

Was it difficult to get to?

There's almost no way to enjoy views of the Kalakala unless doing so on the water. We could see it from the Hylebos Bridge but that was it. There's no other vantage point from the west side of the Hylebos waterway -- probably the same on the east side.

Shame really -- it'd be great for people to be able to see it to help raise awareness toward its restoration.

A great afternoon!

A convivial group and even the weather was tolerable.

Another plus was that we did not have to go paddling with the DragonBoat stalwarts!

Wow. Just looked at the other sets.

Great documentation of Tacoma's urban grit and decay.

The lounge chair underneath the bridge took the day.

Seems like someone would pay money to shoot a movie in an area like this.

Erik: I have three of the Kalakala but since we were all shooting it from the same spot, pretty much every photo's gonna look the same (give or take some zoom).

The shoot's photos are sliding into the 'Tacoma' group on Flickr as we speak:

...and gradually I'm adding to my TFG set there:

I’m sorry I missed the event. I was being a responsible husband today and helping the wife prepare for her sister's baby shower. I'm excited about seeing the other photographer’s pictures. I hope you'll carry on this tradition throughout the summer. I'm bound to catch one of them. I took lots of shots of a baby shower, but there not nearly as exciting as the Tacoma tide flats. Good Job Kevin.

They are all good.

#92 however, is my vote for the best. It could win a prize.

I like #92 a lot. I love pictures of my backside risking injury. :)

Great portraits and texture in those shots, Greg. Well done! I think one of our outings should be one where we restrict the subject or shot technique. It can be fun to see how photographers work within constraints.

Nice photos! I especially like the 'caution' and 'no parking' sign ones. V artsy.
