Antique carousel opening at Point Defiance Zoo 7/15

The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium allows visitors to see the animals and pet some animals. Staring July 15th, you'll be able to ride some, too! They are, however, of the wooden carved variety and you'll have to catch one before it begins spinning around and around. Alright, enough of that.

The zoo is opening an antique carousel with newly handcrafted animals and other touches in mid-July. Rides of whimsical fun will cost $1 opening day and $2 normally -- all of which is on top of normal zoo admission cost. There's plenty of press release related info on the PDZA website. The gist is that the main body of the carousel is an antique that has since been restored. An assortment of themed animals have been hand carved and painted by local artisans and the whole thing was funded by donors and fundraisers.

I'm sure it'll be a lovely addition to an already fantastic local attraction. The question remains: can adults ride, too?

(Thanks Angela!)

sounds like fun. I haven't been to the zoo in several years, but I'll have to go check this out and see about taking some photos..

Truly. It could be a really stunning piece of work. I can't wait to see it in person.

One of the animals (a frog?) was craved and donated by artists in my hometown (Salem, OR). Salem has an entire carousel of hand-carved animals, all made for the purpose by local residents. Carving these animals is an art as lost as carriage building or horseshoeing. They had to make carvers from scratch before the carvers could make the animals from scratch. Results were VERY impressive. I'll be anxious to see Pt. Defiance's carousel and ride the frog!
