Review ~ Blackwater Cafe in Tacoma

This afternoon brought on a meet up with fellow Tacoma bloggers Derek, James, and Jamie at the Blackwater Cafe in downtown Tacoma. Upon seeing the building in what I would call an obscure part of downtown I was psyched. It resembles a brick version of a 1950's cafe (satellite pic - long, skinny building in middle of map) with its corners rounded but with a great black metal sign and a smooth dark red paint job to give it a vibe much more subdued than any Starbucks you might walk into. Once inside the mood didn't change and, for a Sunday afternoon, it was great to see people here enjoying the coffee and wifi. I was greeted by a familiar PLU face from my media lab days who took my order and served me up a great mocha with just the right amount of sweet and of a temperature most might find too cool but that I enjoyed because it meant I could begin drinking right away.

Our meeting there went well and, apparently, this place was busy enough that a reader and frequent commenter on our various sites was at a table right next to ours. Slightly off the downtown beaten path, Blackwater was a welcome exhale from Tully's or Starbucks. Although the crowd was fighting to be a bit younger I didn't feel that just because I didn't have a piercing or tat I didn't belong. I'd give this place a rating of "when I want coffee from a place with a pub-like mood" for it's dim ambiance and smooth drinks. Hopefully I'll find myself up the hill from downtown once in a while during the week so I can truly enjoy this place anytime.

Never heard of this place but it sounds really interesting. You'll have to take us there sometime!
