The road to New York
As I may have mentioned to some of you the PLU vocal jazz ensemble was invited (after a strong performance at the Reno Jazz Festival) to sing at an event in Carnegie Hall in New York in the Spring of 2003. Tonight began that journey for the PLU singers and rhythm players that showed up for jazz choir auditions tonight. The director, Wayne Bliss, is spreading the trials out over four nights to make them more like normal rehearsals. We're learning two pieces so he can gauge each of our swing ability and group blend. We also have to prepare a solo piece (gotta pick that out sometime here) I presume so he can see what kind of potential each of us has.
If accepted into the group this would be my fifth (and final, I swear!) year in the group. I'm just getting too old for this $#!+. Besides, I hope to be a gradumacated individual after this school year (and maybe another summer session). I never want to feel like I'm standing in the way of anyone so it's important for me also to make sure to free up a spot in the group for other tenors to fill.
But the auditions will continue and we'll see how everything goes. In the meantime, I'll begin saving my pennies just in case I need them to pay for a cab in the Big Apple.
