Possible fund drive?
Today I reach out to all my readers and users of websites served here at our house. Would you contribute a small donation to help save our server? Nearly every nigth this week I've devoted to maintaining the current server that hosts numerous websites of family and friends. Its problems stem partially from the fact that the machine itself is a Frankenstein of parts and pieces from computers long since past. Not only does it host websites but routes email used in the day-to-day lives of a few people. As a line of communications, I'm pretty sure we'll all aware of how important is can be for this stuff to just plain work.
Well, currently it's not. I'm still fussing about trying to bring our server's email capabilities back up and, if nothing else works, may have to re-build and re-install the entire thing. This is not a simple nor speedy process that can easily consume days. My idea is this: raise some funds to buy brand new, rather than hand-me-down, parts and do this right. As far as installing and configuring a new server I'm your man. As far as the bandwidth provided by our DSL, we're fine there. I just want to have a reliable platform on which our websites can thrive and our email may reliably flow. I don't want to shut this down because of the flexibility it offers for adding new websites and tweaking the ones we've got. Proper commercial hosting services with a decent amount of space, the ability to use a purchased domain name, and have some email accounts is about $15/month. I don't want to do that and I certainly don't want to recommend that sort of solution to anyone I know.
So, here's the question: Would it even be worth my time to have a goal then ask readers like you to contribute to a Save Our Server fund? This is not the drive itself but just a question about feasability. I'm up for it if you are and I don't think it would take much from any of you to get us into a far better hosting situation.
Need another question to get you involved? How should the following license plate be read?
