Red light cameras coming to Tacoma
According to this morning's News Tribune our fair city will soon have eyes where it didn't before. They don't know where or how many just yet but red light cameras will soon be coming to an intersection near you. The City Council gave these cameras the green light and, lucky us, we could see tickets in the mail this summer. Have $101 a pop to spare? Then by all means, keep running red lights.
3/5 - Not a photo you want to be in, TNT
I just saw a report on the news the other day about Auburn's red light cameras and they haven't lowered the number of traffic violators -- just added $160,000 dollars to the city's pocket book. Will the same thing be true here in Tacoma? Maybe this is also an indirect way to encourage taking public transportation?
3/2 - Traffic cameras fail to deter Auburn red-light runners, KOMO
I think my biggest concern will be knowing when the camera takes our picture. Does it do it the instant a light turns red? What's the law there? If I'm already going through a yellow that then turns red, will I get a ticket? If I'm just spacing and accidentally run a red light, should I get a ticket? I ask because we should all be able to know this before an autonomous system begins fining us money. Seems like computer-controlled policing won't have the judgment skills a real, live police officer can. I certainly try not to run red lights but the yellow to red thing happens. Nevertheless, smile!

Maybe soon we'll be creating a market for companies like this who sell GPS-based warning systems for red-light and speed cameras:

Amazing thing, GPS.

Or perhaps I'll need one of these to keep from dozing off and running a red light:

There is another barometer to check along with the Auburn cameras: they have red light cameras in the area of Lakewood outside Steilacoom. I have no idea how much of a deterrent they've been.

I'm filing a class action on red light camera citations and am looking for class members in our suit. I got my camera citation in OC, CA (Fullerton). My lawyers are on contingency and believe we have a great case. Contact me if you are interested in joining me as a class member. We should create a website or google map with all the redlight cameras and host it on one of these local blogs so we can protect our citizens.

Sure, if everyone can list off the ones they know I'll setup a map.

The intersections I've seen are all clearly marked as photo enforced. Although if someone can't tell that a light is red they may not notice the giant signs letting you know about the cameras.

Well to be honest I can't imagine such a system in my country. In Poland for eg. "rapid breaking" is forbidden by law to avoid dangerous situations. I think more dangerous situation is the one in which you break rapidly than go through as they say in Poland "with a late orange and early red" :D Maybe such an explanation would work in Tacoma :) Cheers from Poland.
