Spanish Steps rehab funding on Council agenda

Spanish Steps rehab funding city council agenda item

Tonight's City Council meeting has an item on the docket to help rehab the Spanish Steps near the old Elks Building. There's a grant for nearby $1 million allocated and they're slated to vote to give the go ahead to use it. Flipping to page 12 of the agenda for tonight's meeting you'll notice info for what these moneys will go toward:

"The rehabilitation includes streetlighting, hazardous sidewalk replacement, tactile curb ramps, curb bulb outs, pedestrian furnishings, wayfinding, interpretive displays, and landscaping."

Sounds like a pretty solid upgrade for the area. Too bad there's nothing allocated for a water slide or zip line down the hill. ;) I'm sure they need to take care of re-building the railing that car ran into but it sounds like the plans are inching toward this being a pocket urban park with those furnishings and displays. A quick glance on Google pointed me to a construction timeline from the City that shows planning taking place now, bidding out this summer, with construction underway in the Fall to be complete at the beginning of 2008.

Any upgrade is certain to help further this area and encourage the thoughtful development of the Elks.

What a great (and overdue) project.

Having these stairs repaired (and the Elks restored) will connect Broadway and Commerce and allow people to travel between Broadway and Pacific again. The lighting will certainly help alot.

Right now, the disrepair of the stairs is pretty symbolic of the state of the downtown.

I wonder what "wayfinding" means though. Does that mean a series of signs?

I just happened to see your name on Alicia's site, and thought "Oh my gosh!" I wanted to say hello and congratulations on your marriage!

As somebody who walked to work everyday up and down those stairs for the past 5 years... let me tell you, i've seen some freakin' scary stuff laid down on those steps.

I "walk the steps" about every day as well.

They are getting a bit better. However, up to last year, there was occasional "activity" on the landing which, upon seeing, would often cause people to walk all the way around to 9th street. so as not to break up the party.
