Tacoma likened to itchy sweater by Seattle columnist

Just saw on GritCity a blurb about a Seattle columnist who described Tacoma in a rather uncomfortable way. Apparently our fair city is like an itchy sweater. Here's the quote:

Even for those who bought in, Tacoma feels like a sweater that you just can't wear. It looks nice, with the water views and mountains. You got it far cheaper than you would pay in Seattle. But every time you put it on, you itch so much you can't wait to take if off.

I know where not quite "there" yet but I find Tacoma a great place to live, work and play. Take one sample of the energy behind a bunch of the local blogs and you'll know that.

So GritCity wants pics of us Tacomans living uncomfortably in sweaters. I want to know what kind of metaphors you'd assign to our neighbor to the north? The Emerald City could use a dose or two so folks Google'ing out there in the Internets can see both sides of this itchy sweater coin.

2/23 - Wear a sweater. Represent. GritCity

Well, I was hoping more for comfortable sweaters. But you know, some people have wool allergies.

Seattle seemed to like Tacoma when we were not a threat and were content to sit in squalor down south. Out of sight and out of mind to Seattleites.

Now that Tacoma is raising it head up and generating a bit of buzz, Seattle reporters look like they are getting nervous and apparently threatened trying to redouble their efforts to convince everyone that the place is really still just as bad.

Worse, the progress we are making to clean up crime, pollution and blight is being portrayed as our failure to be "authentic."

The stories basically are coming out as:

"Come on Tacoma. Don't you know who you really are? Be proud of your dirt and grime and abandoned buildings and crime. Who do you think you are? You're Tacoma. Stop struggling so much. You can always drive to Seattle if you want to see a real city."

Time to apply a little reverse psychology:

SEATTLE: Tacoma but with inflation.
SEATTLE: Like wearing a wet parka -- should keep you warm but does the opposite.
SEATTLE: Where popular beer brands go to die. [Olympia could use this slogan, too.]
SEATTLE: Gateway to beautiful Pierce County.

Aww, that's annoying. I like Tacoma, I sort of miss it.
