Things to do in Tacoma when it's raining (or whenever)

After a some early summer weather we've plunged back into and on-and-off forecast of late spring in the Pacific Northwest. Here's a couple ideas to get out without taking the chance of getting soaked. This is particularly timely since so many of our favorite TV shows are wrapping up their seasons and we'll be left with plenty of spare time on our hands.

Blue Mouse Theatre [map]
We all like movies, right? So why not avoid the noisy crowds and save a little cash by hitting a 2nd-run flick at the Blue Mouse in the Proctor area of Tacoma? It's a simple place with matinee tickets running $3.50 (tree fiddy) and normal adult rates at $4.50. Although they hold special events this isn't so much of an art house cinema as the Grand and may appeal to a broader set of people. Plus, they're home to Saturday night showings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show!

Go Bowling [map]
For most of us bowling is akin to mini golf because of its utter silliness. Replace the small, colorful ball and pain-in-the-butt courses with a really heavy, large ball, a straight course, and some good-for-nothin' pins and you've got bowling! You get to heave that monster as fast as possible and make noise knocking the pins over and usually order a drink or two in the process. Best part is now all the alley's in Washington are smoke free so you can take your kids without shaving off a year or two of their life from that second-hand stuff.

Botanical Gardens [map]
Stop and smell the flowers and take the family or your favorite sweetie to see and smell some exotic plants at the botanical gardens in Wright Park. This place is a total gem that is free and pretty warm inside to keep everything growing. You can enjoy plenty of pretties from the rain forest without the whole rain thing.

Feel free to send me any of your rainy day recommendations and I'll post some more later. For now, enjoy, and get out (inside)!
