Review ~ Hitting lunch at the Varsity Grill

After being denied our craved Thai food at our favorite place in the area, Sarah and I instead tried the nearby Varsity Grill. Although supposedly a sports bar, we gave it a shot anyway. Upon entering the decor is warm and actually kinda' stylish. We were seated at a cool raised booth with comfortable cushions and decent privacy given the places popularity. We were very promptly served our appetizer called mac 'n cheese bites. These were little fried wedges of batter filled with, you guessed it, mac 'n cheese. Let me tell you, these were a hit with both of us! I was surprise and impressed and will certainly recommend these to anyone! From there our lunch came quick. I tried out a caesar salad with chicken that was pretty decent. The salad greens were crisp but some of the crutons weren't quite as crunchy as I'd like. The chicken was also a bit too smoked for my taste as it didn't have any other interesting seasoning to it.

Sarah had a great looking BLTA served on croissant bread with extra crispy smoked bacon. She seemed to enjoy it pretty well. This place is certainly on par with The Harmon and will compete readily especially with that whole mac 'n cheese bites thing. Although those parmesan garlic fries at the Harmon are pretty tough to top. Game on, Varsity Grill. Thanks for a good time. I think I'll give this one a rating of "about once a month" for good food that I don't often crave but will do when there's nothing else around.

Kevin I'm going to have to disagree with you about Varsity Grill being on par with The Harmon. VG offers a far more welcoming space, a more diverse menu, large portions and is far better for accomodating large groups. And, that small, lounge-y area in the middle would be great for a "Chopstix Night". Even ignoring all that, those mac n cheese bites would pull me in everytime!

Yeah, I agree with you on the inviting environment. It was very comfortable in there both physically and esthetically. The Harmon is a good deal louder which is not my favorite thing in the world (see a few weeks ago nearly sitting right up against a blues band at The Spar). There is some serious debate in my head about the mac 'n cheese bites versus the Harmon's parmesan garlic cheese fries. Both are to die for!

Thanks for the opinion. Let's keep 'em coming, people!
