The Subway Ratio

After working out at the local Y Sarah and/or I sometimes like to grab a sandwich. The convenience involved is ridiculous mainly because there's a Subway in our local Y. Yup. Gluttonous Americans rejoice -- there is a God! After a breathtaking workout we can indulge our hunger and get a meal before we even get back to our cars. You know those calories you watched tick by on the digital readout that piece of equipment you sweat all over? They're baaaaack.

Anyway, the Subway Ratio. There's effeciency problems with this business model. It seems that at said Subway after 5pm at night there's a steady stream of customers willing to Eat Freshâ„¢ without a care in the world. Seemingly appropriate would be the number of employees working the restaurant. Three would sound just about right. Well, tonight there were indeed three people dawning Subway uniforms only two of them were eating and only one was working. The only reason this is discouraging comes from the fact that whether one, two, or three people are working there's rarely more than one person behind the counter. There's plenty of room back there. As I previously mentioned, there's plenty of customers as well.

My advice to the folks up at Subway corporate would be this. Lose two of the three employees who aren't working and are, in fact, eating your profits (literally) and pass the savings on to the consumer. I'd easily wager yours is the best fast food out there but the price we pay for it is sometimes prohibitively expensive. If you cut the employees a bit you might be able to lower a meal at your establishments below $10/person. Just a thought. Otherwise, you're seriously losing money embracing the Subway Ratio of 1:2 -- one employee for every two taking a break. No wonder the Chinese will take over the world! So... very... effecient...
