Urban Chalk Invasion: Tollefson Plaza Edition

Whether related or not to the success of the chalk art popping up at Frost Park on Fridays, it appears that the phenomena is spreading. While enjoying an afternoon snack at hello, cupcake Angela mentioned she and Steve saw some chalk-related activity in Tollefson Plaza. Since they were riding their motorcycle nearby they couldn't stop to investigate but, after our treats, we all walked down there. Sure enough, a pile of free chalk and encouraging written messages to pick it up and make your mark. So we did.

Though simple, I've probably never had as much fun in the Plaza aside from something like Showcase Tacoma. Best part is that it was just something we did on a whim without need for a formal event taking place. Maybe it was someone inspired by Frost Park, something related to a scavenger hunt/fundraiser that was going on downtown, or someone else. This is how any park or public space should be used day-in, day-out. Despite more grand ideas about the Plaza, some buffers along Pacific in the form of large planters, some benches/game tables, and a more lively fountain would turn this place into a more comfortable, usable space.

For now, a little scrawling with colorful chalk will have to do. Gotta' start somewhere. Thanks to whomever for inspiring some activity here. It was a welcome detour on a lovely Saturday afternoon.

the movement is spreading. The revolution will not be televised. The revolution will be blogged.
