Steam Vent ~ Views

Seems to be a bit of chatter about Tacoma growing up (literally) and concerns about folks' current and future views. "Steam Vent" is a new feature I'm trying here where I'll introduce an issue and let folks comment away. For the edition of the Steam Vent, let's talk views. Here's one that ought to get the conversation going: Continental Grain's new cargo ship umbrella!

There's also concern over some some proposed tall condos along the Thea Foss and then there's things like solid brick walls. I'm also not a big fan of above ground power lines. Even if I could afford it, I'd never buy a house like this or this with views cross-crossed by wires. Sink 'em underground, I say, and that way they won't get hit by cars or knocked down by trees!

See? It's that easy. Just let out some steam and vent. Enjoy!

I think I'm missing the point by saying this, but I'd love to buy the first house, steal all the cool craftsman light fixtures, and resell the house...

Yea, but I just couldn't stomach buying such a great place, paying a premium for the view, and having power lines in the way. I guess I'm being picky because I'd want any photo I take from the view to be unmarred. If I had the $$ it'd sure be a nice problem to have!

I still want to lobby for putting lines underground. I may have to snap a few pics the photoshop to show folks what could be.

you *are* being pickky :)

interestingly enough, I was just told by a co-worker that some people aren't liking the new 'car port' umbrella built at the grain dock there? He said it's blocking views or something? I'm wondering what view.. and from where.. it's blocking. Most of the structure was already there.. it's just been extended out more. I'm confused I guess..

If you take a gander at the umbrella from Division coming down the hill it's pretty bulbous. I could see some of the condo types from around there not enjoying it *in* their view but it doesn't block anything but a section of the water.

I'll grab a pic and post it. It was a bit surprising when I first saw it from that perspective.

indeed.. that must be who is complaining. I'm sure they miss that wonderful view they could see before they were installed :)

I'm more worried about the proposed condo towers that might be built north of the 11th St. bridge. Those would block views of muc of the port and bay from a good portion of downtown :(

Yeah, I've seen the signs with the artistic renderings of them and I almost couldn't be believe my eyes. Looked like something I might seen in downtown Vancouver BC rather than here. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out.

That's kinda' the questions though: Do we want a big city or small town waterfront there? Whichever it is, the City needs to make that abundantly clear so folks like us in the blog community don't have to stir up much when inconsistencies arise.

that is indeed a bit question the city needs to answer. It seems that right now they're just letting any ideas go forward whether it really makes sense or not. It doesn't seem like there's any real guidelines or even just clear goals other than "attract businesses and build stuff".
