What is a 'Bumbershoot'?
Sarah and I took the bus up to the Seattle Center today to enjoy the music and crowds of Bumbershoot. Sarah's idea to head up came from recommendations of co-workers and because a perrenial favorite of ours Seal was performing on this particular day on the main stage.
Once we arrived there was no telling where we needed to head since this was our first time here and we hadn't looked at any maps of the venues. We passed by the blues stage (we'll return to that later), a stage with a sweet steal drum band, a path-side drummer, and into the high school stadium where Seal would play. Now that we had a lay of the land we headed out to get some Orange Julius for lunch, wandered a bit more to the drum orb stage to hear some electronic beatniks, past a shaky young flute player, and back into the stadium for Seal. He was great! The crowd love him and his songs of tolerance and peace were refreshing in this time of war and politicing.
After Seal we headed to the blues stage for a bit to hear an incredible musician and his band play a handful of songs. Nick Vigarino’s Meantown Blues band first appeared on stage with only the lead singer/guitar player. He made his stringed instrument sound like far more than just a single guitar. From there he brought out the members of his groups one at a time - the drummer, bass player, and then the tenor sax player. In parts and together this group had everything one could enjoy in a blues band.
The bus took us home just as smoothly as it took us away. Sarah and I soon satisfied our hunger with Thai at our favorite Galanga on Broadway in downtown Tacoma.
