What's growing in your garden?

Blueberry in cereal

I wanted to share a warm, summer morning scene with you this Monday. No, it's not a sunny sunrise but a small slice of the bounty that is our local berry crop. By "bounty" in our garden I mean about 20 blueberries but that's better than last years eight.

Despite living on a small urban lot we've endeavored to rid ourselves of useless grass and instead grow plants that provide for local wildlife a little and us as well. Sarah could probably list everything but I'm love all the lavender she brought back a couple summers ago from Sequim. The bumblebees are all over the stuff from dawn 'til dusk which just makes me happy. The new little garden we just put in has a raised bed where we planted four different tomato plants. One roma plant in particular has too many little baby green tomatoes to count!

So what's growing in your garden this season?

My peppers didn't do well this year (so much for the experiment of growing them in the same pot as flowers). But my basil, chives and parsley are booming. The cherry tomatoes are beginning to turn red so we'll see how they taste soon.

The blackberries are looking good too. If I would have time to do something with them this weekend, I might have picked some. I'm off next week and plan to putter around the house - I'll get them then and make some jam!

I've got lots of cat mint planted with my lavender - it's fabulous. It's round with purple flowers like lavender but a little bushier. When I walk outside, I hear lots of buzzing from all the bees.

Yea, we didn't get on the peppers this year. Last we grew some pretty successfully in a plastic greenhouse we bought.

Maybe Sarah will chime in about all the herbs we've got growing.

What's growing in our garden in La Center - corn, Armenian & lemon cucumbers, a huge mound of "free-range" gourds or pumpkins (?!) on the compost pile, tomatoes, and pears. No plums because it is either an off year or a late frost. Had one cucumber so far and can't wait for the tomatoes! Your blueberry is beautiful.

Boy I wish we had room for a pear tree. Yea, I'll need to snap some other photos of our garden to share.

Oh! Squash as well. Cute little finger-sized guys right now.

I'm loving my garden too. I have an artichoke plant, garlic, oregano, rosemary and lavender. I have a walkway planted with yellow squash, zucchini and cosmos flowers. I experimented with some potatoes: purple and golden. And yes, tomato plants. Looking forward to a BLT sandwich with purple potato salad?

I can't remember every herb we've got in our garden this year, but off the top of my head I can say we've got rosemary, french tarragon, garden sage, stevia, chives, lemon thyme, sweet basil, spearamint, peppermint, pineapple mint, orange mint, chocolate mint, oregano, and as Kevin mentioned several varieties of lavendar. None of its in huge quantities, but enough for the two of us to use a bit this summer.

I'm proud to say I planted the tomatoes and the basil! Glad they are doing well! Love you guys!

great photo of your blueberry! it's neat to hear what everyone's growing too. i'm a relatively new Tacoman (moved here from the south) and was psyched to find the Proctor Community Garden! I'm growing quite a bit the most exciting being purple carrots, beets and zucchini to feed all who are hungry in Pierce County (anyone want some?)

Thanks Emily! Purple carrots? Don't believe I've ever heard of such a beast. Glad you found a spot a the community garden. Never been there myself, only driven by.

Cheers!
