Winthrop now in Prium's hands
The News Tribune is reporting that as of Jan. 31 Prium Companies now holds the deed to the Winthrop. No press release yet from Prium but AF Evans sent out word. As David Seago of the TNT's Editorial Blog points out, it's interesting how defensive AF Evans is concerning progress they made with their property management company over the last couple months making the area around the Winthrop safer. After listing 11 bullet points about what they did, they had this [very lawyerly phrased] bit to say:
In large part due to ... efforts at the Winthrop, there seems to be a sense of growing encouragement that through this mutual diligence, the situation on Commerce is turning. Although our role at the Winthrop has been short-lived, we know that the positive momentum at the Winthrop will continue under the close watch of Prium, and we wish you all the best as you continue the hard work of transforming the neighborhood.
Welcome to the neighborhood, Prium! We wish you much success and hope you'll continue to have the community in-mind as you move forward with the Winthrop.

What great news for Tacoma.
Two years of hard work by merchants, architects, reporters, preservationists, restaurateurs, attorneys, builders, politicians, civic boosters, newspapers, housing experts, bloggers and the Tacoma community at large has finally paid off.
By the way, great coverage of the Winthrop Hotel issue Kevin on your photoblog.
You had numerous articles, at least a couple of city council hearings, op ed pieces and 6:00 a.m. Quigg meetings all documented for future generations by photography.

Okay, so now the question is, which direction do they intend to go with the building? Previous TNT articles said it was moving toward becoming ritzy digs, which to some would run counter to its present role as low-income housing.

Prium will restore the Winthrop Hotel as a first class hotel again as it was originally designed.
You may want to search in Kevin's page for the word "Winthrop" to get the history.

And now, its neighbor (best known as the Hotel Stothart and the Mecca Theatre) is about to be renovated as well into apartments and office space. Bravo!

Is Prium asking for a historic tax break after they receive $2M from the city taxpayers?

The entire Winthrop project is about $70,000,000 including the replacement housing that will be built by the current residents (even though Prium is under no legal obligation to build the housing).
The city of Tacoma is only loaning Prium a small sum that must be paid back.
The cost of the building is small compared to the renovation cost. I certainly hope that the building can qualify for historical tax credits. Usually, it is must cheaper to rip down historical buildings than to renovate them,
